President Barack Obama reportedly plans to exclude US Arctic waters from offshore leasing under a five-year plan set to be released soon, effectively blocking the frigid waters of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas from oil and gas drilling until 2022. According to multiple media reports, each citing unnamed sources, the 2017-2022 leasing plan will not cover tracts in waters north of Alaska. The Interior Department, which is in charge of leasing, previously indicated that the Atlantic Ocean would also be excluded from the latest leasing plan, meaning lease sales for the next five years will likely be limited to the Gulf of Mexico.
